Director’s Profile: A Legacy Forged in Precision and Passion

Born in 1956 to Indian parents and educated in England, my journey into the world of retail was not one of choice but necessity. Before completing my first year at university, I was thrust into managing a thriving family pharmacy business—a responsibility that instilled in me the resilience and vision to carve my own path.

Determined to build something of my own, I launched a children’s fashion brand, spanning retail, wholesale, and manufacturing. By 1987, my venture had grown to such prominence that it was acquired by a publicly listed national retailer in a multi-million-pound deal—a defining moment that granted me the rare luxury of time to seek out my true life’s calling.

A Culinary Awakening : With an insatiable curiosity and a newfound freedom, I embarked on a global journey, immersing myself in the cultural and culinary traditions of the world. It was in the unassuming surroundings of a small Izakaya on the outskirts of Tokyo that fate intervened. There, in the dim glow of a humble eatery in Shin-Matsudo, I encountered Kamiya-San, the chef-patron whose philosophy on life and craftsmanship would forever alter my course.

Seeing a conviction in me that even I had yet to fully grasp, Kamiya-San took a bold risk—staking his own reputation to secure me an apprenticeship with one of Japan’s most revered nokaji (master blacksmiths). What began as an introduction soon became an obsession. I dedicated the next decade to the relentless pursuit of understanding and mastering the artistry of mankind’s most fundamental tool—the cutting edge.

The Birth of Japanese Knife Company

By 1996, with my soul shaped by the forge and my mind honed like the very blades I studied, I returned to London, where fate brought Miranda into my life. With her support, I founded the Japanese Knife Company (JKC) in 1997, officially launching in 1998.

From its inception, JKC was a trailblazer. We were the first UK retailer to launch a website dedicated solely to kitchen knives. For 17 years, we have remained the only physical retailer in the UK specializing in culinary blades. JKC introduced Ceramic knives to the UK, as well as the finest warikomi, Damascus, handmade, and high-speed steel kitchen knives—revolutionizing the industry and elevating the standards of craftsmanship in the culinary world.

A Lifelong Commitment to Excellence

Nearly 25 years since my first encounter with the artistry of Japanese blades, my passion burns brighter than ever. This journey has never been about mere commerce; it is a mission to share the profound beauty, precision, and synergy of form and function with those who seek to experience the pinnacle of craftsmanship.

This is not just a profession. It is an unwavering devotion to an artform—one that I am privileged to share with the world.

Beyond the Blade: A Celebration of Japanese Tradition

True to the spirit of a classic Hamonoya, the Japanese Knife Company extends its offerings beyond kitchen knives, curating an exquisite selection of premium penknives, hobby knives, and rare gift items. The experience is further enriched with sushi-making lessons and traditional Japanese food preparation workshops, bridging the gap between artistry and functionality.

The company’s dedication to education goes beyond the storefront, with live demonstrations on sharpening and knife maintenance regularly conducted at renowned restaurants across the UK. Private sessions are also available upon request, ensuring that the art of knife care and handling is passed down with the same reverence as the blades themselves.
